Folk-Art Quilter Inspires Creativity

Born in Zambia, Sue Spargo was educated in the country of South Africa. She received her training to be a nurse and soon married and moved to England. This shift between two very different environments and cultures inspired many of her designs.

The stark contrasts between the arid beige and browns of the African bushveld and the lush greens of the rolling hills of Southern England have continued to be a rich source of ideas. She particularly enjoys the influence of traditional African designs; they are so simple yet full of energy and color. All these early experiences combined to stir her love of “primitive” arts and crafts and grew into her focus on folk-art.

Throughout her life, the United States beckoned and in 1989 the dream was fulfilled and they moved to Connecticut and subsequently to Tennessee, Utah and Ohio. Each new state presented sharp contrasts and stirred new ideas. With each move, she met many new and wonderful quilt enthusiasts and through them added abundantly to her knowledge and creativity. Quilt makers are special people to her.

Sue will be doing a lecture entitled ”Finding Your Creativity”. We hope to see everyone in March!!

Susan Hill

Vice President

Program Update

Rescheduled:  Rita Steffenson was able to reschedule her lecture with us to August 14, 2007.

A Note from the President

Fairborn City Schools closing and Level 2 Alerts kept all of us wisely at home in February. Besides, it was more fun staying inside with family, food, heat and shelter than being outside sliding around on the roads in a blizzard. Being snowbound for days also was cozy for quilting! Rita Steffenson has agreed to reschedule.

If all of you had picked up your Stash Busters Challenge for only $2, you would probably have it done by now. Mine is on the wall and coming together nicely! Susan DeSantis has come up with a creative concept that offers lots of opportunity to do something special (see article below).

We’ll definitely vote on the changes to the by-laws at the March meeting. They’ve taken up a page of the newsletter for far too long. Speaking of the newsletter, the board thanked Chris Garcher for the wonderful job she has done at putting this together month after month. Each of you might thank her too. We were also grateful to Susan Hill for listing our meeting programs on the website.

You will notice that the March meeting features an outside speaker which means there will be a $5 charge for non-members.

If you want to send in your $20 dues before the meeting, send them to our membership person Kim Gros, 12185 Wellington Ave; Medway, OH 45341.

Please thank Ed Chamness as well for his work on the website. In addition to the website, Ed works diligently behind the scenes on numerous Guild issues. It’s amazing how many tasks must be done to keep us organized and moving forward.

All this we do for the love of quilting,

Ron Lundquist

President, 294-7844

Stash Busters Challenge

There is no fabric packet to buy this year for our Challenge in October. A fee of $2 will be charged to defray the cost of instructions that you will receive.

The Challenge will be to select two crayons at random out of a box which will give you the two colors you must use. That represents two fabrics. Then you must use three additional fabrics although there is no upper limit as to number of fabrics.

The minimum size is 144 inches perimeter. The maximum size is 264 inches perimeter. There are more instructions, but that is what you pay the $2 to get!

Sue DeSantis

Challenge Chair

Spring Workshops

On Saturday, April 14, the Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild will sponsor a workshop on a strip-piecing technique for the traditional “Sunburst” design.

The cost is $25 for Guild members and $30 for non-members. Registration will begin at the March meeting.  The workshop will be opened to the public beginning Monday, March 19, on a space available basis.

The workshop, from 9 a.m. to noon, will be held at the St. Andrews United Methodist Church on Fairfield Rd.  There will be sign up sheets at the March meeting for the Sunburst Workshop.  More information can be found on the MVQG’s website. Please sign up soon.
