MAY
MEETING
May 13, 2008
7:00 P.M.
Fairborn Senior Center
325 N. Third Street
Fairborn, Ohio
9378784141
Visitors Welcome - $5.00 Speaker Fee
Even if it is a BEAUTIFUL day we will not cancel the meeting!
Quilting: From a Man’s Point of View
Our speaker this month is Ann Calland. She is the curator of the Marie Webster home and Headquarters for the Quilters’ Hall of Fame. She will do a combination lecture and trunk show. She wants to tell us a little about the Hall of Fame and then bring out her brother’s quilt tops. The trunk show is called “Fred Calland Quilt Designs: Quilting from a Man’s Point of View”.
In June, we have Vikki Pignatelli who will have a trunk show and lecture. If any of you have items from a workshop that you took from Vikki, please bring them for show and tell. As we have done in the past if you are not a guild member the cost is $5.00 to enjoy the lecture. When the Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild compensates their speakers we do ask that nonmembers pay an entrance fee. We encourage you to become a member, get involved and share in the great times we have together.
I hold each of you in high regard for all of your help and participation in this guild! Not just one or two people can do it all, YOU are what makes it work and every little bit helps! From saying hello to a stranger to cheering for your best friends show and tell. Thanks so much!
Shari Brindley
Vice President
A Note from the President
This is an exciting time as we prepare our quilts for the show May 16 and 17. Please plan to help work the show and sign up for slots so that we know the various jobs are covered. The sign-up sheets will be at the May meeting.
You can also help the guild by donating wall quilts to the silent auction. All the proceeds from these sales go to the guild. Not only can you donate a quilt, you can also buy one! What better way to honor a fellow quilter.
So how can each of us help make the quilt show a success? Raffle ticket sales! Encourage friends, family and anybody else to attend the show. Contribute quilts to the auction. We also get a small percentage of sales from the boutique where members can put items for sale. Sign up to help put the show up and take it down and staff it for the two days it runs.
In short, participate enthusiastically and enjoy it.
The quarterly board meeting is May 5 at 6 p.m. at the Fairborn Senior Center. All board members and committee chairs are asked to attend and all members are welcome.
All this we do for the love of quilting.
Ron Lundquist
President, 294-7844

Table Requests at Monthly Meetings
Some Committees need tables set up for space to sign up for different activities, and when they do, they need to contact Rose Hoeg so tables can be set up for that purpose. Tables are set up each month for the Library and that is a standing requirement. If anyone needs a table, please contact Rose Hoeg at 426-2206 or e-mail before noon the day before the meeting at quilt500(at)sbcglobal.net.
Secret Stitchers
Our unveiling will be during break time in May. This will be the last month for secret stitchers unless someone else would like to take it over. It is a very easy thing to do and I really got to pay attention to someone I didn’t know before, and actually I feel a little more connected to her because of secret stitchers. Thanks to all who participated.
May 3rd Monday Stitch-In

The 3rd
Monday evening stitch-in will be held May 19th at Mindy Marik’s home. The

687-1867.
Please call Mindy for directions and to let her know you’ll be coming. Enjoy an evening with friends and get some of your quilting and piecing done!

Workshops for 2008
July 9 (Wednesday)
9 or 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 or 4:30 p.m. (6 hours) Cathy Franks
Running Amok with Creativity
Cost is 40.00
Location of workshop is McDonald’s Training Center, 278 E. Main Street, New Lebanon, Ohio 45345
Maximum number of students is 20.
August 16 (Saturday)
Described as a one day workshop Leigh MacDonald
Based on her new book “Adventures in Circles” which won’t be published until July
Cost is 40.00
Location of workshop is to be determined.
Maximum number of students is 20.
The summer workshops are filling up fast. I will be collecting your workshop fees at each meeting. Workshop fees MUST be paid two months in advance or your spot will go to someone on the waiting list. Here is how it works. (I’ll use Cathy Franks for my example.)
Sign up for Cathy’s (July’s Class) now just to get your name on the list. You can pay for the workshop now up until May’s meeting. After I leave May’s meeting (Tuesday night) those on the waiting list will be contacted via mass e-mail. The first person to get the money to me is in the class. So, if you are on the waiting list and you really want to go you can give me a check to hold your spot. (I will not cash your check until I’m sure there is an opening).
If a class is not filled up and paid for two months prior (May for example) with our guild members, a notice will go out on the website and to other guilds so that we can fill this class.
Please understand, I’m not intending to be malicious, I just need everyone to know that if these classes don’t fill up the budget for programs will be in the RED! One of my favorite quilt colors but not one of my favorite accounting colors.
If you have questions, please feel free to e-mail me at xbrindley(at)donet.com or call me at 9373728861. I’m really looking forward to these classes and getting to know all of you better through quilting.

Quilter Needed
The Huber Heights Senior Center is interested in starting a Friday afternoon stitch-in. They would like to have a quilter there to help and answer questions. You would work on your own project. Linda Adams has volunteered to oversee the April stitch-in, but we are looking for someone (or two) to be on hand to help out in the future. The center is located on Chambersburg Rd. Please call Linda at 8794692 for any questions.
Reminder
Quilt pins are available at each meeting from Kim Gros. Each pin is $3, up to 2 pins. After that they are $5 apiece.
