A Note from the President
My how time flies!
Summer as we know it is over and
school will be in session again next week. My younger two are quite ready and
maybe even a little willing. Our eldest, Kyle, is quietly groaning over all the
extra classes he must complete to graduate. Mostly because he didn’t actively
participate when he should have meaning as a freshman, sophomore and a junior.
He developed the attitude that it was OK to do very little, very poorly or not
at all and not suffer the consequences.
Often
times, this can happen to us as a guild. We go along with the flow, enjoying
the show, so to speak. Sometimes we forget to participate because we are
enjoying ourselves. Many times we feel as if our efforts won’t really affect
the health of our guild. This isn’t
true. Your efforts and attitudes do impact our group. When we get our noses out
of joint for whatever reason, others around us do see this problem. Let’s try
heaping blessings on each other and go the extra mile to be cheerful, kind and
helpful. Your method of accomplishing a task may be quite different from the
persons actually doing the job. That does not make either group wrong, just
different. Next time, take your turn at bat and try your way. The guild will be
glad to support you.
At
our last board meeting, we discussed three major items, the budget for 2007,
the 2008 Quilt show and the bylaws. It was a very long meeting for us, but
productive. First, the budget: a tentative budget has been knocked out and will
receive final approval from the board in November. We made every effort to
provide a realistic budget and managed to stay under the red line by about
$1100.00. It will then be ready for approval by the general membership at the
January 2007 meeting. Please attend and
vote. It will probably be published in the December and January
newsletter to give you a heads up on what we have available for the upcoming
year and how it will be disbursed. Thanks to Diane McClane and Lyn Mosher for their guidance and
their version of the Idiots Guide to
Guild Budgets.
Second
the Quilt Show: The final tally was $9234.33 with all bills paid. We agreed to
lock in our date with the Montgomery County Fairgrounds as the 22–25 of May
2008. Step one is complete. Step two is a Quilt Show Committee. These are the
positions:
Chairperson Co-Treasurer
Workshops Demonstrations
Vendors Judging
Hanging Setup
Auction Raffle
PUBLICITY
Getting
started now gives you the chance to pick the brains of your predecessor while
everything is still fresh, and they know where all the notes are. I would like
to see an apprentice system go into place. Each position has two chairs, the
previous show’s leader and the trainee to assume that title the next time
around. This approach would help eliminate that lost-in-the-woods feeling of
jumping in cold turkey.
Pat Emannuel has filled the Raffle chair position. THANK YOU for starting the
process. She needs help with designing, piecing and quilting our next two years
(meaning 2009-10) main source of income. This has never been a one-person job.
Check your roster and see if you live fairly close to Pat. You might make a new
stitch-in group working on the raffle.
The
2008 Show is entitled “Generations: Quilting Past, Present, and Future”. This
theme promotes the MVGQ objective to further the art of quilting through
education and communication. Let’s all join our hands in friendship, encourage
high standards of design, technique and creativity, and promote the
appreciation and preservation of quilts to preserve the art of quilt making.
I’m going to encourage my 16-year-old daughter to make a quilt for our next
show. Maybe we could have a mother/daughter/son and/or grandparent/grandchild
section!
Finally,
on to the bylaws: Some minor amendments need to be addressed. We are planning
on having this finished, printed and delivered with the New Year. Our printer
is going to love us. If you have good typing skills or knowledge of a method to
make this less painful, please step forward. My computer skills are functional,
but limited to cut and paste. Good rules are like fences: They help to make
good neighbors by establishing our boundaries and answering our questions.
On
that note, I’ll see you all in September. Don’t forget the workshop with Shirley Liby.
Call Susan Hill at 937-426-4740
to reserve your spot. The cost is less than $50.00 and includes your kit fee.
What a bargain we’re receiving. Hurry before they’re all gone.

I have quilted
there from almost the start but last few years we have really been having
quite a few come to quilt. Time goes fast because, of course, we are
talking all the time among ourselves and with the people that come to

curious.
Is this you?
I

I'm a member of the
Contemporary Quilt and Fiber Artists group and also Ohio Valley Quilt

getting in touch with one of your members.
I met her in a
class she was taking upstairs at the event. She has blonde hair and I

I had taken a
class with Phil Beaver a few years ago on painting fabric, and her quilt
looked like she might have taken his class also.
I would like to
get in touch with her and ask a few questions about her beautiful quilt.
Could you please pass this along to her.
Thanks
