The October Challenge meeting is one of
my favorite meetings. I love seeing what everyone creates. Thanks to Sue DeSantis for all her work in
putting this together. Great job. I also want to thank
those who volunteered for the Nominating Committee.
Congratulations to Maria Elkins on her entries in the
Houston Quilt Show. She received an Honorable Mention in the category Art-Miniature with her wallhanging

Quilts: Traditional, Challenging and Innovative
Quilt Show — May 7, 8, 2010 Set Up — May 6, 2010
The Challenge is over but I hope those who haven’t finished theirs will continue. It would be neat to have a section of the quilt show with our 2009 Challenge. So you now have about five more months to finish your projects.
I want to say a big thanks to Pam Bohnke and Billie Ferguson for finishing the Quilt Show raffle quilt (Shadow of the Bear). It’s gorgeous!!

Quilt Show 2010 Reminders
If you weren’t at the last guild meeting you missed seeing our raffle quilt. It is amazing! I plan on buying many tickets for myself. We should have lots of interest in buying tickets, so get ready.
After the meeting, there were more show-and-tell items to add to the growing list for our show. Where are yours?
Now some information on the boutique: This time we are not getting a bedding license from the state and therefore the list of quilted things we can sell is a little shorter. Just placemats, table runners, wallhangings, purses and small things. I will have more information at the next meeting.
Keep those machines busy.

Pointers & Tips
For Quilting
See Dark Edges: Place a white or colored piece of
paper under dark fabrics when rotary cutting on a dark mat so you can see the
fabric edges more clearly.
Paint Chip Tip: Create your own color library with
complementary paint chips available at home decorating stores. Paint chips are
easy to take along when shopping for fabric.
Flannel Carriers: Cut out large pieces from a
flannel-backed tablecloth and roll it up to store quilt blocks and unroll it
when you're ready to work on it
Trading Card Holders: Buy trading card dividers for needle
storage and place them in a binder. Insert needles into felt or muslin squares
that have been cut to the size of the dividers. The holders can also be used to
store swatches of your fabric stash.
Stop Fabric Diving: Buy a single stitch plate for your
sewing machine instead of using a slotted zigzag plate. It will be easier to
begin new seams without the fabric sinking into the notch. In a pinch, use
transparent tape to create a smaller hole.
Breaking Thread: To moisturize old, dry thread and reduce
breaking, place the spool in a plastic bag, spray lightly with water and
refrigerate overnight
Backing Material: Remember to purchase backing material
that is similar weight and color to the top of the quilt. It is always a good idea to try and
use the same types of material for the top of the quilt as it will be difficult
to sew through uneven levels of material.
Locating Thread Grains: Sometimes it’s hard to see the
position of threads in printed fabric, making it difficult to locate the
straight grain to mark or cut patches. To locate the thread grains, flip the
fabric over. The print should appear somewhat faded on the fabric’s reverse
side, making it easier to see the threads
Storing Supplies: Purchase a plastic, six drawer filing
cabinet on wheels at an office supply store to store supplies. The drawers will
help keep projects organized.

Quilt Pins
Quilt pins are available at each meeting from Kim Gros. Each pin is $3, up to 2 pins. After that they are $5 apiece.
