Purposeful Roots: Community Quilts Work Night

Visitors Welcome

Extreme Quilting

Can a quilt guild match "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" at its own game?

The Miami Valley Quilters' Guild took on the challenge of creating seven quilts for the James Terpenning Family of Beavercreek, Ohio, when they were announced as the fortunate family to receive a newly constructed home as part of the 2009 season of the television series "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." For the television show, a family is selected to receive a new home which is constructed within a one-week timeframe.  The Miami Valley Quilters' Guild wanted to do a special community project and took on an exciting challenge.

February 2009 Board of Directors' Meeting

The Miami Valley Quilters' Guild Board of Directors' meeting on February 4, 2009, was called to order by Susan Hill at the Beavercreek Library.

Statutory members in attendance were:  Mary C. Miller, Treasurer; Ed Chamness, Recording Secretary; Debbie Bertke, Corresponding Secretary; and Ron Lundquist, Immediate Past President.  Vice President Shari Brindley was absent.

Committee Chairs in attendance were:  Newsletter, Chris Garcher and Linda Adams; Kathy Wrinkle, Library; Diane McClane, Sunshine; and Janet Stohr, Demonstrations.

There was no action requiring official action by the Board.

Susan introduced Diane McClain who will do Sunshine and Janet Stohr who will chair Demonstrations, and announced that Karen Engel will chair the on-going Fons & Porter subscription fund raiser. There is still the need for someone to chair Hospitality.

Because February is a short month and includes the Retreat, it was suggested that materials for the March Newsletter be submitted by Thursday, February 19, to allow for adequate preparation.  The addition of a short term advertiser was announced and there was discussion about the return of two former advertisers and potential new ones.

Kathy Wrinkle announced that the library plans to spend half of its 2009 budget in the near future and reserve the remainder for later in the year to purchase newly published books. Suggestions for books to be added to the Library should be forwarded to Kathy or to Heidi Young.

Mary presented the Treasurer's Report to be presented at the February meeting and Ron reported on the treasury balance for the 2010 Quilt Show.

Diane indicated that members can contact her by e-mail or by phone to report members who might appreciate cards from the Guild.  She also reported as a member of the Retreat Committee that plans are in place and that they are still seeking donation for goodie bags and door prizes.

Other items discussed included the 2009 Challenge, the Anita Shackelford Workshop, the upcoming bus trip to Chicago and participation in the March program of demonstrations by guild members.

The next Board next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Beavercreek Library.
